Quarter 3
An Excerpt From My Narrative About Science
For Science, I started off working on gaining proficiency in standards 1, and 3 (Structure and function, and change, cause, and effect). I took lots of notes to begin. I used articles online, khan academy videos, and crash course videos. For the first quarter I studied the nervous system, and connected it to the nadis. The nadis are channels in the energetic body that carry subtle energy from one chakra to another. The nadis mirror the nervous system. I showed my work towards proficiency in writing by keeping a blog. This connection was 100% up to interpretation, which made it a little harder.
Sitting down for advisory meetings with Aanika was a challenge initially in terms of sharing what I had learned. Science is a subject that is very defined, there is always one right answer. Whenever I told her about what I had done it was a little nerve-wracking, because I don't know if I have that one right answer. Additionally Science is something I tend to have trouble articulating my thoughts on. As time went on though and we had more meetings I found it got easier. Mostly because I knew it was okay to be wrong about things and that her job was to help me find the right answers and steer me in that direction. I also found as I moved through the study I started learning things that she hadn’t touched since college. Which meant I was the expert and her response became, “sounds about right,” this definitely made things easier.
I studied the endocrine system. Each chakra has a gland in the endocrine system that corresponds to it. Throughout this study I continued to write on my blog, which I found very helpful. When I went to explain how something worked it helped me to see where I needed to learn more, and what I already understood. My proficiency in the standard structure and function is shown through my blog.
Originally I was planning on doing something involving people's diets, and looking at energy, to get standard 3 (change, cause, and effect.) After meeting with Aanika we decided this would be too much. I am finishing the year off learning about DNA and how hormones alter this to create a change in the body. My proficiency in this will also be shown through my blog.
During the third quarter making realistic time goals was an issue for me. I acknowledged this in my narrative prior to this and have since changed them. At first I wanted to do a part of the endocrine system every three day. After realizing that this was way too short I altered my timeline to one per week. This allowed me to soak up more information, and to really learn things rather than just cramming knowledge into my head.

I started off
taking lots and lots of notes..
These are just the cover pages of my notes. Most of these notes are from internet resources, and videos. I have used a lot of Khan academy, and crash course videos. Since I was in Branching Out (a single study independent study) before Pilot I have a good amount of knowledge of the chakras, and have focused most of my energy on the western ideas within my study.
Showing my learning
After taking all of these notes I am showing my learning by putting them into article format on this website. As you view this website please be mindful that I am only part way through my study, therefore some pages are empty.
Quarter 4
Again this semester I started taking lots of notes about the endocrine...

Then I continued my blog. This time writing about the endocrine system.
Throughout the course of this semester I have been studying the chakras as well, to connect to my learning of the endocrine system.

After learning about both of these things I connected them on my blog. Lastly I will be learning about DNA and the effect hormones have on it. This learning I will also show proficiency in through my blog.
A screenshot of the total hours in my time log as of 6/14/18 is below. I would not say that in anyway this is an accurate timelog. I often forgot to log, or chose not to when I did anything for less than 30 minutes.
